Not doing something to support cause, or doing to support cause; Which is more effective?
For instance, if the cause is people dying from the effects of pig waste (stay with me here, I will explain this one) than is NOT eating, therefore NOT doing something, eating pork in this instance, helping make a difference, or not really doing anything about the actual issue?
See what I am saying here? The idea of NOT doing (eating pork) is somewhat of a selfish act because you think you are helping. I am not sure that one person can make a difference in this case.
The pork industry still profits, still exists in the world you do not eat pork in. If you actually do something, perhaps start a brigade to get people to stop eating pork by extreme measures, than you are doing something, but in a singular sense I believe that one is NOT effective.
Who am i talking to? Anyone and everyone at once, regardless, does not matter your views.
There lies an issue and I question what any of us (including myself) are actually DOING to actually rid the world of it. Not slow it down, or stop it, but remove it entirely.
That issue I read about presented itself in a corporate magazine, Rolling Stone, in 2006 and I found myself talking and explaining it to some people as of recently.

Reading your blog I think that it is obviously about money for the industry and that is why the only way to actually change the industry is to affect their wallets. You can’t appeal to their morals because they have obviously been lost. The only way to affect the profit is to get people behind you not to rally or protest, but to simply boycott. The way to get people is to educate them on the problem, which is unknown to most. Of course there will still be people who don’t care, but there will be enough that do. Other way to make change is through legislation, which will only be supported if again you have the numbers backing you which will than affect votes. Unfortunately very seldom will people in positions of power make the right decision because it’s right, but rather because it will benefit them or at the least stop them from being received in the negative…sorry this is a long comment. But your right just not participating is not enough to change something unless it is the majority who is not participating.

Have you read The Omnivores Dilemma? I agree with you that one person making the decision may not be effective, but that person will ultimately tell their friends about their experience and educate them about the horrors of industrialized agriculture and hopefully a chain reaction will take effect. It is unbelieveable how cavalier our society is with the lives of animals and how we perceive that their purpose here on Earth is solely to feed us. We broke the nature order of the food chain with big agri business and the waste and contamintaion of our environment is being realized as a big issue. Thanks for this article!
